INTRODUCTION
The Department contributes to the
fulfillment of the mission of the
University by helping students to
develop their skills in Media. The
courses are structured to be strong
theoretically and practically,
enabling the students to be balanced
and well rounded individuals.
OBJECTIVES
The department aims to:

Provide students with the
tools and approaches necessary to make a creative and Christian impact in their area of study.

Prepare students to enter
graduate school.
-
Provide a foundation for such
careers as Law, Journalism,
Publishing, Public Relations, Radio and Television Broadcasting and Advertising.

Prepare students for the management of messages and the
application of a variety of media.
Programmes Offered
Duration
The
normal time for full-time students
(16 credit hour per semester and 6 –
9 per summer) to complete a bachelor
degree in the Department of
Communication Studies is four
years. However, applicants, with
transferable credits may take less
than 4 years of full time study (16
credit hour per semester) to
complete their programmes.
MATRICULATION REQUIREMENTS
In
addition to the university
requirements, a student who desires
to major in Mass Communication must
have a pass in English in CXC
General Proficiency Level 1 or 2, or
GCE O'level of at least a "B" or an
equivalent examination with a
comparable grade.
All
students pursuing a B.A. in the
department are required to do 6
credit hours of a foreign language
at the intermediate level. Students
who do not have a pass in a foreign
language in CXC, GCE or an
equivalent examination must complete
the prerequisite, 6 credit hours of
the beginning course of a foreign
language, before enrolling in the
intermediate level course.
Acceptance into the department of
Communication Studies is based upon
successful performance at an
interview conducted by the
Department Chair and faculty.

Coursework
Essentially this policy covers video
and audio productions, as well as
other nonprint media. All
videotapes and audio tapes produced
in the Department of Communication
Studies in fulfillment of class
assignments, whether made on school
premises or elsewhere, with or
without departmental equipment, or
extra funds, are subject to the
following ownership policy:
1. All such tapes are co-owned by
the student and the university. In
each case the students who originate
the tape should decide which student
or students co-own the tape with the
school.
2. Either the student or the
university may arrange distribution.
Students who do not wish to have
their tapes distributed may veto
distribution.
3. The university will decide
whether or not to put its name on a
given tape.
4. Distribution deals, whether
arranged by the school or by the
student, must be approved and signed
by the dean.
5. Tapes may be distributed only
after a faculty adviser is certain
that all necessary clearances have
been obtained by the student.
6. The student and Northern
Caribbean University have a right
to copies at a given cost when such
copies are needed for University or
student use. |
